70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, with the balance being a blend of Mazuelo and Graciano.
Tempranillo goes by a bunch of different synonyms, depending on the region of Spain you are in. For example, it’s called “Cencibel” in La Mancha (south of Madrid); “Ull de Llebre” (meaning “eye of the hare”, I’ve no idea why) in Catalonia; “Tinta de País” or “Tinto Fino” in Ribera del Duero; “Tinta de Toro” in Toro; and “Tinto de Madrid” in Madrid; and those are just a few of the synonyms!
Labels from Rioja often display the words Crianza, Reserva, or Gran Reserva, referring to the amount of time the wine has spent aging in the barrel / bottle before release. The Muga Rioja bears the “Reserva” designation meaning the wine by law must be aged for a minimum of 1 year in the barrel, and 2 years in the bottle.
Not that this post has much relevance to wine and furthering your knowledge of it, but I thought you might possibly appreciate these photos.
The Rugged Maniac mud race took place this past weekend down in Green Cove Springs, and for some reason I was convinced to participate, along with my wife and a bunch of my very close friends. I ran before her at 9am, so fortunately there aren’t as many pictures of me, since I was the one holding the camera.
Ok so I made that last one up…but seriously!!!
The U.K newspaper the Daily Mail recently reported on “a £1-a-day red wine wonder pill that claims to ward off heart disease, cancer and diabetes is to go on sale in Britain for the first time.”
“Makers Biotivia claim the resveratrol supplement – derived from an antioxidant found in grape skins and naturally present in red wine – is as beneficial as exercise. They say the drug can also protect against Alzheimer’s as well as delaying the ageing process and tackling obesity-related health problems.”
Now, I’m obviously not a doctor, to be honest I don’t even have my first aid badge from my time spent in the boy scouts; however these type of claims scare me. I’m actually surprised this has only just made the news in the UK! I’ve been seeing resveratrol supplement ads on the Internet and for sale in the U.S. for a couple of years now. I’ve also been reading that sales in the U.S. are apparently through the roof, which means that people are buying into this crap.
