YUMMO!!! Grading Rachael Ray’s 5 Ways to Become a Wine Expert Overnight.

Posted on by Kris

Everday with Rachael Ray

I get sent press releases all the time, most of which I don’t even bother opening. This was one of the rare few that I didn’t happen to click “Send to Spam” on.
The email was titled FIVE WAYS TO BECOME A WINE EXPERT OVERNIGHT!”  and being featured in Every Day with Rachael Ray Magazine.

The only reason I opened the email was that I was ABSOLUTELY FUMING that someone has been keeping these “five ways” a secret from me for all these years!!! Countless hours of reading wine magazine and textbooks! Thousands of $’s thrown away on Court of Master Sommeliers and Society of Wine Educators exams! All a complete waste of time and money, when in fact all I needed was to read this article!!!
Imagine my surprise when it turned out the information wasn’t all it was cracked up to be!!!

Catching up with Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher.

Dorothy J. Gaiter and John BrecherOpen That Bottle Night is always the last in Saturday in February, making it Saturday February 26th this year. You therefore better get thinking what you plan on opening!

Every year since 2000, on a special Saturday night in February, friends, couples and groups around the world get together to enjoy “special” bottles of wine, champagne and spirits. The bottle that you enjoy, traditionally, is one that you have been saving for some special event that, so far, has never quite happened.
Open That Bottle Night was created by Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher in the year 2000, and has been celebrated every year since.

The Wall Street Journal (and widely syndicated) wine writers ended their column on December 26th 2009 and parted ways with the newspaper after 12 years, the husband-and-wife team announced their departure at the end of their Christmas Day article.

"This is our 579th and last ‘Tastings’ column. The past 12 years — a full case! — have been a joy, not because of the wine but because we had an opportunity to meet so many of you, both in person and virtually,"  they wrote.

I randomly managed to catch up with the couple for an interview on this website. I have searched all over the Internet, and believe this is possibly the first time the couple have been interviewed since their departure from the WSJ. They also just recently launched their Facebook Page which you need to check out!
Enjoy!

So where have you both been? Your audience has missed you!

We took a year off. We graduated from college in 1973 and immediately went to work – both at the Miami Herald on June 4, 1973. That’s the day we met and fell in love. We worked for the next 36 years without a break – and it was time for one. Our two girls are both in their last years of college, so it was a particularly good moment. We spent the year enjoying life and trying to catch up on our 20-year to-do list. You know that closet you’ve been talking about reorganizing for the past decade? Well, we did it! Gosh, we even reorganized one of our cellars and found bottles that we had totally forgotten about. And, after conducting wine tastings for our column pretty much every night for 12 years, we enjoyed the freedom to drink whatever we wanted. We even tried some local beers!

Is Jennifer Bingham of Cru Cellars Tampa’s Wine Whisperer?

Posted on by Kris

Jennifer Bingham Cru Cellars

This is my first ever feature by an author who isn’t me! Gina Girardot Melton runs www.zestfloridafoodie.com which aims to give readers easy access to delicious food that’s a little bit off the beaten path, and miles away from the many chains and tourist traps that proliferate Florida’s landscape. Make sure you check out her site!

So what’s my type? Spicy and full-bodied or complex, earthy with at touch of silkiness?

To solve my dilemma, I sought the counsel of Jennifer Bingham, owner of Cru Cellars in South Tampa to fix me up with wines that suit my fancy. While Bingham is not a relationship expert or psychologist, she is a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers—and able to crack the toughest wine matchmaking nuts.

Bingham’s wine buzz began when she was studying abroad in New Zealand during college. Realizing that wine could be more than a hobby, Bingham started working at a Chicago wine shop, and later acted as wine director of an uberpopular Chicago wine bar. Today, she and her husband Torrey own Cru Cellars, a wine shop and wine bar on MacDill Avenue.

One of the services Bingham offers is Cru’s Custom Case Club. For a small fee, Bingham sets up a tasting consultation where she sits one-on-one with you and samples wines, delving into your particular likes and dislikes. Then, a custom case is created based on what’s discovered during that tasting.

Taking baby steps…

Every since I got a new camera for my 30th (my beautiful Canon T1i Rebel), I definitely think my photos have been improving. I was therefore quite happy to see that A.T. Richardson Wines are using my photo after my feature on Chockstone Shiraz.  This year A.T. Richardson, next year National Geographic!
