10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Start a Blog – Part 2 of 2.

Posted on by Kris

The 2nd part of my 10 questions to ask yourself before you start a blog…

5. What are you really hoping to achieve from starting a blog?

Money? Fame? Credibility? Free stuff?
Without defining your purpose from the get-go, you’ll have no clear direction and/or achievable benchmarks on which to measure your performance. These benchmarks don’t always have to be money-based; for example, one of the goals I set myself early in my blogging, was to achieve 1,000 hits a day. Another was to receive emails from certain (very specific) individuals in my industry, offering to collaborate on projects. Some of those objectives I’ve met, some I’m still working on.

Money never factored into any of my initial goals, as I knew that if everything else was in place, the money/fame/free stuff would be soon to follow.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Start a Blog - Part 2 of 2.

4. What is the intended focus of your blog?

Are you willing/able to change your blog’s focus to suit the needs of your audience?

The obvious focus of my blog is wine, but as the months went on, I started letting food creep into more articles. After that, I started posting about social media. All of this at the same time keeping wine at the forefront. Who knows? In the future I may start to mention craft beers or cigars…

Your blog’s primary focus/objective is extremely important, but don’t be afraid to go off on a tangent every now and then. Just make sure you know enough about the topic, and be careful not to confuse/alienate your existing readers and blur the lines with regard to what you’re “all about”.

Are Bloggers Disclosing their Relationships with Companies?

Posted on by Kris

News article taken from Libation Law Blog
Are Bloggers Disclosing their Relationships with Companies? Most people are probably very unaware, but the FTC has very strict guidelines regarding the disclosure of any relationship a company has with someone tweeting or blogging reviews of their products.

The Federal Trade Commission’s guidelines “Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising” are a pretty short read.  Which is interesting given that they can amount to some extremely hefty penalties for any winery or brewery that has bloggers or tweeters talking about their products without disclosing the relationships between the brewers, winemakers, distillers and the social media user that’s posting something positive about their beverages.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Start a Blog – Part 1 of 2.

Posted on by Kris

Bloggers Meme

As is the way with these types of posts, I started writing this article hoping to try and fit it all into one, and soon realized that it just wasn’t going to happen. In reality, this post could have probably been 10x the length it is right now.
What follows is part 1, and part 2 will probably be posted sometime over the next few days. These are my 10 questions to ask yourself (in no particular order) before you start a blog (business or personal).

10. How much time can you devote to blogging?

The minute you announce you’re going to start a blog (either personal or business-based), everyone (whether they tell you, or not) will expect you to fail i.e. that you’ll do it for a few months, not receive the “results” you’re looking for/get bored, and pack it all in.

My advice is that if you don’t plan on updating at least twice a week, don’t even bother thinking about starting a blog! You’re just setting yourself up for failure. The obvious exception to this rule is with personal blogs, where you’re not really too bothered about anything other than it serving as a simple journal of your day-to-day “travels through life”.

I’m personally not the quickest at putting together a blog post. An average wine review will usually take upwards of 2 hours to write (including photography, HTML, links, research, fact checking etc.), and even after that, I’ll revisit it after it’s posted and still find mistakes/areas for improvement.
Food for thought…

9. How many contributors are you planning on working with?

When you announced to your friends, co-workers, family and pets that you decided you were REALLY passionate about starting a blog; did any of them offer to contribute to the content?
If they did, I’m going to advise you that it’s in your best interests to politely decline the help of any third party. My reason for saying this is simple. If you really have a passion for this, you’re only going to be disappointed when the quality/promptness of their efforts doesn’t match your own.

If this is a collaborative business blog, there isn’t too much you’re going to be able to do about it.
Just know that you’ll no doubt run into problems. I guarantee it.
