Brettanomyces [Breht-tan-uh-my-sees]
Brettanomyces (or “Brett” if you want to sound like you know what you’re talking about) is a yeast that is found on grape skins, in barrels and in the winery itself.
Brett can be found mainly in red wines, as the color is extracted from the skins of grapes during red wine fermentation, although Brett can and does occur in white wines, and can sometimes be attributed to sloppy (unhygienic) winemaking.
Brett is actually very difficult to get rid of in a winery, so they take many steps to avoid it in the first place. Believe it or not though, low levels of Brett in wine can actually be a good thing, as it adds a touch more complexity and character (in controlled doses). For this reason, Brettanomyces is only viewed as a fault if there’s excessive levels detected.

Facts
- Ok kids, so since the weather has started warming up (at least here in Florida), we can start to break-out some rosé reviews!
Rosés really are quintessential “patio wines”, but some guys have a problem drinking it (for the same reason that they have a problem wearing pink) i.e. they think that it threatens their masculinity. Therefore, it’s my hope in this review to kill two birds with one stone, namely:
– Show that rosé wine isn’t just “for the girls”.
– Prove that real men can indeed wear pink.
If I achieve one out of the two, I’ll be happy…
- The Waterbrook winery was founded in 1984 in Walla Walla (admittedly, it does sound like somewhere out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon), Washington. Their goal has always been to focus primarily on producing value-driven wines, which especially considering the economy, has stood them in good stead with the critics. They currently have 19 wines at 90 points and above with the Wine Spectator, as well as numerous features in their ‘Best Buy’ section. Even Robert Parker rated them in the “Top 5 Value Wineries in America”. Not too shabby!

News article taken from Shanken News Daily
A little-known small family-owned winery in California (you probably haven’t even heard of them) E&J Gallo has confirmed they’ve added Tuscany’s Brancaia label to their portfolio. The label was formally part of the Hess Collection
.
The Brancaia portfolio includes Brancaia Tre, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; Brancaia Chianti Classico; Brancaia Ilatraia, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petite Verdot; and Brancaia Il Blu, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wines range in price from around $40 up through $85 a bottle.
