Braised Duck with Pinot Noir, Cherry Tomatoes and Grapes Paired with Landmark Vineyards Grand Detour Pinot Noir 2008

Braised Duck with Pinot Noir, Cherry Tomatoes and Grapes Paired with Landmark Vineyards Grand Detour Pinot Noir

I can’t remember the last time I had duck. I know it must have been at a restaurant, but it’s been a while. Anyways duck is my favorite bird, to eat at least…

This was a very cool recipe that I found for Braised Duck with Pinot Noir, Cherry Tomatoes and Grapes. It actually requires a whole bottle of Pinot Noir poured over the duck into a casserole dish ,and then braised in the oven. As much as I’m sure the Landmark Pinot would have tasted amazing when reduced to a mere cup, I opted for an El Cheapo brand of Pinot I found at The Fresh Market. After the wine is reduced, you add whole grapes and cherry tomatoes and cook it down some more. Fairly simple recipe really!

I have to confess, I have never used grapes in a recipe, but as it turns out they were one of the best parts of the dish! For starch I just quartered fingerling potatoes, roasted them with salt, pepper and rosemary. For greens, I stumbled across what has to be the worlds largest asparagus at Fresh Market, which I just threw in a pan with white wine, butter, salt and pepper.

The biggest pain in the arse with this whole recipe was removing the giblets from the duck. Not something I have done before, but it isn’t really any different from chicken.

Which wines are they pouring at the White House this holiday season?

Posted on by Kris

According to the Wall Street Journal, Landmark Vineyards along with Pride Mountain winery were chosen to be poured at the White House this holiday season because “both offer great stories of women who developed a passion for the industry.”

It’s almost as if the Obama’s knew I am featuring Landmark this week!

The WSJ reports that according to Ms. McCormick Lelyveld, the White House chefs, military musicians and administrative staff all participated in their selection.  She also stated that “All wines selected are also price-conscious.”

A Few Facts About Syrah / Shiraz…

Posted on by Kris

Syrah Grapes on the Vine

Syrah / Shiraz is a dark black grape with a very thick skin, and depending on the soil and climate the flavors and tones will change greatly, creating distinct wines between their regions of origin.

It’s worth noting that the vast majority of the world’s plantings of Syrah are located in France, primarily in the Rhone region which extensive DNA testing concluded is where the grape originated.

Syrah and Shiraz are used interchangeably around the world to refer to the same grape, and there really are no hard and fast rules. The grape also goes by a few other synonyms such as Balsamina, Candive, Hignin Noir, Marsanne Noir, Sirac, Syra, and Sereine, although these names are not widely used.
